Footage from May, 2022 showing the old, broken weir on the River Teme near Tenbury Wells. I couldn't find a lot of info on it, but it is a shame it can't be used to cross the river.

A video of my hike of the first Midsummer Mortimer Trail ultra. I think I'll run it next year. It was a fantastic challenge, but 10 hours 40 minutes was a long time to be on my feet. Had a great time though. Andali Events did a fantastic job. Great organisation and they really took care of everyone out on the course.

Tenbury Wells to Kyre Pool
Переглядів 274 місяці тому
I've started looking at some of the (largely) forgotten footpaths near where I live, and decided to walk from home to Kyre Pool around 4 miles away. A nice short hike, 8 - 9 miles (there and back) to get me back into hiking after a fairly non-eventful winter. Unfortunately, due to a brand new pair of trail shoes, the hike would take a lot longer than planned . . .

As part of my, and my mate Danno's, amazing visit to Canada in May of 2023 we hiked around the Mount Washington Alpine Resort. Although it was covered in several feet of snow in places, and the lakes were largely frozen over, it was actually quite warm, and absolutely beautiful.
Scotland 2010 - West Highland Way and Great Glen Way

A new (2023) film, editing together footage from a two week hiking trip in Scotland in 2010. My brother Darryl and I walked the West Highland Way from Milngavie near Glasgow, to Fort William, followed by a climb of Ben Nevis, the highest point in Britain, and the Great Glen Way, from Fort William to Inverness. Corrections 27.15: The hostel is at Kinlochleven, not Rowardennan as stated.

An overhead journey through the route of the Six Shropshire Summits Walk, using the Ordnance Survey online software. This is a route I marked out using the directions given by the organisers, and my own experience of having walked the route. Not necessarily the 'perfect' route, but it'll do the job! There is a GPX route file for this. Please let me know in the comments if you would like a copy.

This is an updated edit (to remove copyrighted music, add more footage and photos) of the hike my brother and I undertook in August/September 2008. It was an amazing experience. Heavy packs (again) and wet weather made it difficult, but the awe-inspiring sights along the way made it all worth it.

@ashropshirelad Hi Gordon! Thank you very much! Great to meet you the other day, your mortimer trail vids were a great help when I walked the trail for the first time a few years ago. Check out my Thames video. Blew up during Covid for some reason. I'm going to start walking the severn way in a week or so. Want to do a source to sea video for that two. Unfortunately sprained my ankle on the mortimer trail so had to cancel the Pennine Way. Backpacking would have been very painful! Take care, Dean.

An enjoyable video and a reminder as to how wet it was in early spring. I sometimes carry a pair of lightweight secateurs for cutting back the really bad encroaching vegetation; it looked particularly difficult where the aqueduct was, well done for pushing on. There seemed to be a lot of road walking and I guess this was determined by the search for suitable river crossings. On walks I find eating a small amount every hour with liquids keeps the energy levels consistent😀

I happened upon Dean's understated videos whilst researching the Mortimer Trail. This one is again very well filmed whilst capturing the beauty of the Border Country with a train of thought commentary which perfectly mirrors just what goes through any walker's head when out and about. Just the sort of easy going travelogue which I find appealing. I have passed through this area many times but will definitely make the time to explore further, especially the Harley's Mountain footpath.

Watching your excellent video(s) inspired me to pull my Mortimer Trail guide out of the bookcase and walk the trail in one go. A long day and many of your observations still stand after 4-years, the signage is improved but by no means is perfect. I missed a path to skirt round Bradnor Hill and also ended up on Offa's Dyke path! No real excuse for me as I have walked the OD path before but after a big miles day I too was struggling to work out which was to go. A eureka moment followed and I switched on my phone and used GPS to follow the path down to Kington. On any regular walk mistakes don't matter too much but on a 30-mile route each error takes time (and energy) to correct. I think you did really well using just the guide book.

@@hamrammr1 Unfortunately I don't think the trail could ever become mainstream as such because of its relative remoteness and not passing any shops / facilities. It is a beautiful undertaking though and such a rewarding walk to do, the border country at this time of year really cannot be bettered. Best wishes for the 29th: The main overgrown parts continue to be the descent from Shobdon Hill Wood to Byton (now subject to a path deviation from GR387644 which I chose to ignore and was ok), the crazy overgrown section on the ascent of Wapley Hill which you also humorously refer to in your Brampton Bryan video and the woodland path to the west of Green Lane Farm towards Rushock Hill. I am sure I'll do the trail again sometime but not anytime soon given it took two days for my legs to recover!

Enjoyed the watch but " a shambolic muddle" would sum it up! Taking 7.75 hours to walk the final 11 miles is pretty shocking. I think the lack of your phone with the OS App was crucial. I walked Ludlow to Croft Ambrey recently and found the App essiential for quickly correcting the minor deviations off route that I made!

Actually completing the walk at all without my phone was impressive given all my info was on there, but that critical error near the end with the Offa's Dyke path . . . Could have done without out that. Not sure 8 hours for the final 11 miles is right though . . . Probably felt like it.

Based on what is said in Wikipedia, I suspect that the real source of the Thames is just north of the roundabout at the confluence of the A417 and the A436, in the grounds of the Ullenwood Bharat Cricket Club.

  • @mnbalfour1985
    @mnbalfour1985 Рік тому

The usually quoted source of the Thames is at Thames Head (at grid reference ST980994). This is about 3⁄4 mi (1.2 km)[15] north of Kemble parish church in southern Gloucestershire, near the town of Cirencester, in the Cotswolds.[16] However, Seven Springs near Cheltenham, where the Churn (which feeds into the Thames near Cricklade) rises, is also sometimes quoted as the Thames' source,[17][18] as this location is farthest from the mouth and adds some 14 mi (23 km) to the river's length. At Seven Springs above the source is a stone with the Latin hexameter inscription "Hic tuus o Tamesine pater septemgeminus fons", which means "Here, O Father Thames, [is] your sevenfold source".[19] The springs at Seven Springs flow throughout the year, while those at Thames Head are seasonal (a winterbourne). With a length of 215 mi (346 km),[20] the Thames is the longest river entirely in England. (The longest river in the United Kingdom, the Severn, flows partly in Wales.) However, as the River Churn, sourced at Seven Springs, is 14 mi (23 km) longer than the section of the Thames from its traditional source at Thames Head to the confluence, the overall length of the Thames measured from Seven Springs, at 229 mi (369 km), is greater than the Severn's length of 220 mi (350 km).[21] Thus, the "Churn/Thames" river may be regarded as the longest natural river in the United Kingdom. The stream from Seven Springs is joined at Coberley by a longer tributary which could further increase the length of the Thames, with its source in the grounds of the National Star College at Ullenwood.

It's been my dream to buy a Dutch barge and live on the water, but I think that limits my ability to cruise because of the locks so I might be limited to the Thames. This makes me feel like it might not be so bad, especially if I can get to Reading, where I went to uni. Maybe I could do another degree. Only thing is, when you get to central London, it looks terrifying for a relatively small boat.
